Six BiyOSeF students traveled to North Carolina State University in Raleigh to present posters at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) this year.

Forrest Myers, Claire Brown, Ross Robertson, and Jeff Miller all receive a Student And Faculty Excellence (SAFE) grant from the College of Arts and Sciences. These grants will go towards various research equipment and funding towards travel to conferences. Way to go!

Ross Robertson receieved a grant from the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA) in the amount of $500. Ross is a first year graduate student and is currently working on a microfluidic device to help in a myosin project. The grant will go toward research supplies. Good job Ross!

Jeff Miller presented his research at the American Association of Physicsits in Medicine (AAPM) meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. His poster presentation was titled Determination of Elastic Modulus of Cells with Optical Tweezers.

Nathaniel Scott, Jeff Miller, and Greg Rapp all recieved a North Carolina Space Grant to conduct research for the summer. Each grant is $6,000 and will go directly to the student. Nathaniel Scott will work with Laser Tweezer Raman Spectroscopy.

Sam Migirditch was awarded a fellowship by the Fokos society of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self Organization. The fellowship included three months working in Göttingen, Germany and a research presentation at the institute.

Over spring break, Michael Paolino gave a presentation at the APS March meeting in New Orleans. His presentation was titled, A Technique for Studying Cardiac Muscle Dynamics with Automated Optical Tweezers. Mr. Paolino is a graduate student in the MS Engineering Physics program.

Nykesha Fyffe receives a grant from the Office of Student Research at Appalachian State University. The grant is for dichroics in the automated optical tweezers apparatus. Ms. Fyffe is an undergraduate senior majoring in Applied Physics with a minor in Mathematics.
