Congratulations to Jessica Barrios-Hernandez, Angela Chang, and Jenna Osborn. Working with Drs. Brooke Hester and Jennifer Burris, these three BiyOSeF students have each received a $5,000 Undergraduate Biotechnology Research Fellowship from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. The Research Fellowships prepare undergraduate science majors for careers in biotechnology by supporting relevant hands-on laboratory research experience and other activities that contribute to career preparation. The research funded in this program must have strong relevance to biotechnology science, technology, and applications and must fall into at least one of four different tracks: agricultural biotechnology; industry-relevant projects; collaborative projects; and, regionally- relevant projects.
The topics of their research are:
- Development and Testing of a Raman-Tweezers Apparatus (Jessica Barrios-Hernandez)
- Development of a Raman Spectroscopy Membrane Thermometer for the characterization of metallic nanoparticles used for cancer therapy (Angela Chang)
- Collagen network synthesis and characterization via scanning electron microscopy and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (Jenna Osborn)
There were only 11 awards given out in all of North Carolina - 3 of them to BiyOSeF students!
